Overview

To have a Lisbon museum named after you is a great honour. To be Portugal’s greatest comic artist by public acclaim is exceptional. Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro born in 1846 was both of these.

The great man’s museum is in Campo Grande. The exhibition is rich in paintings, ceramics and contemporary sketches of a great character and his historic moments… and of course his most famous creation “Zé Povinho” (which represents the Portuguese people and it is still used).

Visit this unusual place when in search of something different, for you will find nothing ordinary here. Instead, you will discover inspiring traditions within which the great artist worked. Is it kitsch, in poor taste or exceptionally sentimental? Some say it is. Many more prefer to elevate it to art.

This museum is not a place to find something you are comfortable with. In fact, we would prefer not to tell you where to start. Rather wander through the halls and connect with something you find most meaningful. When you relate to it, hold the thought, Bordalo Pinheiro is now connected to you. This is your moment!
