Overview

The original Church of Nossa Senhora do Loreto in the Rua da Misericórdia, stood on the foundations of the 14th century wall King Fernando built to define the western boundary of the city. It was rebuilt several times, following a fire in 1676 and the earthquake of 1755.

The exterior façade is distinctly Baroque, giving it an almost temple-like appearance. Just before you enter, look up to the papal coat of arms supported by two angels on the outside wall above the door.

As you enter the single nave before you rises up an artistic painted ceiling, and inside you’ll find twelve small chapels, six a side (representing the twelve Apostles). Each one of these chapels is adorned with an Italian marble floor, impressive artwork, and a statue of an apostle.

The Italianate styling reflects the fact that Genoese and Venetian merchants settled in here, in the 12th Century, and introduced the Loreto tradition to Lisbon (thus this church being also known as Italian Church.

Other reasons to include the Igreja do Loreto in your schedule include the working pipe organ dating from the 18th century, and the magnificent high altar with saints on either side between two soaring marble columns.
