Overview

The Church of Sacramento is on the Calçada do Sacramento in Lisbon’s Chiado district. It stands on the ruins of an older building destroyed by the 1755 Great Earthquake, when the ceiling of the nave fell in and killed everybody beneath. The ‘New Church’ – which was intended to be a faithful replica - was complete by 1805.

This splendid edifice was full of rich decoration when it opened, displaying the very best of Lisbon’s artistic talent. It suffered severe damage in the Chiado fire of 1988, and only fully reopened in 2009. Fortunately, the Shrine of the Lord’s Supper within the chapel altarpiece retains its original glory, including an oval medallion overhead.

It is necessary to set aside some time in order to view the grand Iberian organ high up in the choir, the eight silver lanterns and the twin altars in the side chapel. Make sure to stop by the enormous throne that has fallen into disuse.
