Overview

During the 1770’s Queen Mary 1 was having difficulty producing a son and heir to the Portuguese throne. She promised herself that she would build a Basilica to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, if she succeeded. After she gave birth to a son she commenced building in 1779. Unfortunately the boy died of smallpox in 1788, two years before the project was complete.

The outside façade boasts an impressive entrance with two bell towers, rows of statues along the top, and a huge rococo dome that lets light into the space below. Within it there is a large oblong room in ancient Roman temple style, with colonnades and a semi-circular apse at the far end.

Highlights to look out for include Queen Maria’s huge ceremonial tomb illuminated by the dome, and a permanent Christmas manger attended by more than 5,000 figurines. After you have admired the marble interior in tones of yellow, pink and grey, you can climb up to the dome and take in fantastic city views.

Do pause and listen to the sounds of the great organ, if someone is playing it when you arrive. The Basilica has great acoustics, and does justice to the liturgical musical tradition that was once at the heart of worship here.
