Overview

In November 1993, the Lisbon Council opened a remarkable cultural centre in tribute to the renowned poet Fernando Pessoa, in what was once his home, adding a special significance to a museum located in the Campo de Ourique area of the city.

Born in June 1888, his father died five years after. After this his mother married with the Portuguese Consul in Durban, South Africa, where Pessoa spent much of his formative years in. Pessoa’s first claim to fame was when he received the Queen Victoria prize for his essay in English for the University of Cape Town – he was 15 years old at the time (1903).

Pessoa went on to create and publish many works in various magazines and publications in both Portuguese and English. He regarded his writing not as his profession, but rather as his vocation!

Here you can find an extensive database of poetry - and the fine traditional and digital libraries - you will need to allow time to take it all in.

Keep any eye open for the “Dreamatorium”, which opened last year on the 125th anniversary of his birth. Located towards the top of the building, this is where the Pessoa’s experience becomes multisensory:  here the words dance and the poet’s angels and demons combined take you to Pessoa’s imaginary world where he was when he created his masterpieces.
