Overview

Located in the amazing Parque das Nações, Lisbon’s treasure trove of tourism destinations would not be complete without its world class Oceanário. It is not just for the children, this is Europe’s largest aquarium, and it is very popular with both tourist and local alike, admitting more than a million visitors a year.

What awaits the enthusiast is a remarkable underwater world of weird and wonderful creatures and objects – viewing the main tank is like standing on the sea floor and being right there in the midst of the ocean.

An unbelievable collection of sea creatures awaits you! With an estimated population of 16,000 “residents”, representing 450 species, some are more extrovert than others.

The Oceanário comprises four tank displays around the focal point of the massive central tank which accommodates the different marine habitats found in the varying ocean conditions in nature. Clever use of large acrylic sheets between the tanks gives the illusion of one single display.

Allow time to visit the many different aqua themes, and be sure to view the magnificent giant sunfish. Due to its strict habitat requirements this is a rare resident in world Oceanariums.

Guided tours are available for the inquisitive, and the educational rub off that a visit here has on the youngsters is bound to stay with them for life. Plugging into a guided tour will definitely reveal far more, as the guides know all the best vantage points and can pass on essential information one might miss.
