Overview

Here is a museum with a difference. If you like the idea of walking around the decks of a fighting ship from yesteryear, then look no further than the frigate Dom Fernando II e Glória. Actually, this historically important ship is part of the maritime museum and cultural centre located in the Almada district of Lisbon.

Constructed mainly from local teak at the Daman shipyard in Goa, India, and in 1845 the vessel arrived in Lisbon. The wooden-hulled frigate boasted 50 guns and made a formidable adversary, offering protection on the sea routes to the colonies in the East.

Dom Fernando II e Glória remained in active service until 1878, when she sailed for the last time as a patrol ship. Laid up on the Tagus River and largely forgotten, the once-proud vessel was almost lost to a devastating fire in 1963. She remained abandoned and neglected for almost 30 years.

In 1990, the Navy decided to restore the hulk to its former glory and the vessel now forms part of the greater maritime display. Take a tour around the magnificent ship and get a feel for the hard conditions and difficult existence the sailors of the time had to endure. The Dom Fernando II e Glória’s splendid shape and rigging, make her quite the centrepiece as the grand old dame delights in her welcoming role.
