Overview

The word “picturesque” does not do justice to the beautiful town of Sintra. It has hills and valleys, pristine forests and many fine palaces, all combining to conjure up a surreal feel to this romantic retreat. Occupied since the Paleolithic, Sintra has always delighted every civilization that has passed here, from which we highlight the Moors who left a strategically positioned castle and a palace with fountains thanks to the abundant supply of pristine water.

No surprise then, when this attractive enclave on the Estoril coast became the summer retreat of the royal family. UNESCO’s decision to make this beautiful “garden of eden” a World Heritage site in 1995 was hardly a difficult one either. This is a very popular destination for the folk of Lisbon to escape to whenever they can – they just love Sintra and its magical surroundings.

Plenty of interesting attractions await the tourist when they reach Sintra. Quinta da Regaleria is a popular first choice for many - it is an enchanting castle with awesome gardens. Staying with things medieval, do drop by The Palacio Nacional da Pena – apart from being a National Monument, you might imagine you were looking at a backdrop of a movie setting. No visit to Sintra would be complete without viewing mesmerising Monserrate Palace, while The Moorish Castle in the centre of Sintra is probably the oldest remaining fort in Portugal.

There is so much more to see than just castles and palaces; the fabulous Estoril coast is a short drive west. Here, you will discover Cabo da Roca are and the Guincho Beach. Few tourists visit Sintra only once. This speaks volumes for this unique destination.
