Overview

Cascais – pronounced kush-kaish - is today a delightful seaside resort with a medieval charm all of its own. Lying some 30 kilometres directly west of Lisbon, it has a population of approximately 200,000.

The origins of this quaint coastal town trace back to the Pre-Historic Era and by the 12th century it became a simple fishing village (thus the name of Cascais – mount of shells in Portuguese). Cascais’s strategic importance soon became obvious owing to its position in the Tagus estuary. The 17th century saw the construction of several forts around the area - some still exist.

When royalty chose to make the village one of their summer playgrounds in the 1870s, the town suddenly became a popular tourist destination. It really is a quaint town to add to your itinerary. It still has a thriving fish market where fishermen sell the day’s catch to the highest bidder. You could of course just head for the lovely beach and chill out for the day.

Many visitors love wandering through the narrow streets while enjoying the designer boutiques and numerous fish restaurants. For some the real action starts in the evening, with plenty of clubs and bars to revel and jive in.

For the more serious-minded, there are museums and monuments aplenty, find out more from the local tourism office.  A visit to the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Assunção still has an amazing display of azulejos – colourful ceramic tiles – that survived the 1755 earthquake.
