Overview

The regal town of Mafra lies 30 kilometres northwest of Lisbon, and is a very popular tourist attraction thanks to its stunning National Palace. More than just a royal dwelling, this structure included a convent, monastery, grand library and basilica in its time.

The palace was to honour a pledge by King João V to construct a monument after the birth of his son and heir from his consort, Mary of Austria early in the 18th century.

While the National Palace is the main attraction, you need to spend some time in it to take in all the different facets. Starting with the monastery - it must have cost a lot of money even in its time. Some call it the biggest monument to Portuguese Baroque. While the sheer size of the church impresses and humbles one from the outside, the interior is a statement to incredible wealth in terms of the finishing details.

Look forward to plenty of exercise when you view the palace and the convent, it is a massive area, almost never-ending, but if you are expecting to view exquisite furnishings and artworks, you could end up disappointed. It seems as if the “king’s ransom” has transferred to various museums in Lisbon.

Other attractions include a collection of cranky old windmills in the hills above Mafra, where the local famous Mafra bread (pão de Mafra) was once made. There are several of them in a village called Malveira about 8 kilometres out of town, and they really are worth the journey time.
