Overview

Some regard the suburban area of Estoril as Lisbon’s giant playground, for the simple reason that it offers long stretches of beach on which to laze on when the sun shines.

With the night comes the fun and all the other attractions you would expect on an idyllic stretch of estuarine coastline start. Add in the magic castles and old fortresses that watch over the bodies beautiful like sentinels, and you pretty much have the full picture.

For the permanent population of around 27,000, Estoril is also a convenient – though expensive - place to live, with getting to work in central Lisbon quick and easy. The Phoenicians, Romans and Moors were quick to inhabit this area for its strategic position in Western Europe. Control here meant they had the upper hand elsewhere too, and it goes without saying that the Estoril neighbourhood inherited a rich cultural mix, and some contrasting architectural features along the way.

The Estoril of today is vibrant and trendy, with a fabulous mix of things ancient and modern. From inviting Tamariz Beach - complete with its own castle - to one of the biggest casinos in Europe, here your hardest decision is which of the many choices of bars and fine restaurants to select. Allow time to take in as many of the attractions from yesteryear as you can. Museums, castles, churches… the list is endless.

No formal invitation is required to visit wonderful Estoril. Just make it happen.
