Overview

Positioned atop Mount Pena near Sintra, Palácio Nacional da Pena occupies the same site on which the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Pena (Our Lady of Pena) once stood. It surely has to be one of the most romantic of any castle of palace on the planet, with the surrounding forests and misty clouds combining to make the perfect picturesque visit. The view from the inside looking out is equally breath taking, and the palace interior is well worth exploring.

The concept of a palace was the brainchild of King Consort Fernando 2 who, in marrying Queen Dona Maria in 1836, realised that this would be the perfect spot to build a palace for the royal family.

Designed according to revivalist and Romantic style, Palácio Nacional da Pena incorporates several architectural influences such as Manueline and Moorish. In order to complete the desired magical and yet regal image that he desired, King Fernando decided to create an English woodland around the palace.

Walking around the palace and its grounds provides an interesting insight of how the royals would have lived there. With plenty of artworks to admire, the visitor can, at least, get a feel for the lavish lifestyle from a bygone age.

Be sure to visit the chapel and see the incredible alabaster altarpiece. Walking past the specially decorated interior walls with the use of the trompe l’oeil wallpaper is well worthwhile.  Add in the astonishing and beautiful tiles - azulejos – and the result is a fantastic outing to a very special attraction.

No palace tour would be complete without a visit to the stunning Palácio Nacional da Pena!
