Overview

The Miradouro Portas do Sol may be one of the smallest belvederes across old Lisbon, but together with nearby Santa Luzia this area is extremely popular with locals and tourists alike. Offering clear balcony/patio views over the Tagus River and across the old city, there are few better vantage points for studying Lisbon’s intriguing landscape.

Expect a picture-perfect scene to unfold right before your eyes. Well positioned above Lisbon’s surviving medieval quarter, the visitor can contemplate the views and landmarks with ease.

The narrow cobbled streets show little change from when they first appeared, with only the specially designed yellow funiculars able to navigate them so effortlessly. Where else in the world would find is so pedestrian friendly place?

So what can you expect to see from this belvedere? Start with the view over the terracotta roof tiles of buildings in ancient Alfama, and home in on the Church of São Vicente de Fora. The Tagus River forms an impressive backdrop, enabling the visitor to scan the horizon for many kilometres.

This attraction boasts a statue of St. Vincent, the patron saint of Lisbon, and he is holding the symbolic mascots of the city, a boat and two ravens in his hands. Nearby cafes are perfect for you to have something to drink and admire the view. Just like the other belvederes around the city, the scenery before you changes quite dramatically when viewed at night, particularly during full moon.
