Overview

Described as a terrace with a view, Miradouro de Santa Catarina is not only renowned for its fabulous panoramic view of the docks and the Tagus River; it is also famous for its Adamastor statue which watches over the viewpoint as if standing guard. Adamastor is a mythological Greek Giant, famed by Portuguese poet Luís de Camões in Os Lusíadas, first printed in 1572.

The parish of Santa Catarina is a hilly residential part of old Lisbon in the Bairro Alto District. The local hills provide the ideal elevation, and offers some of the best views looking south across the Tagus River. With a rich heritage of significant 18th century architecture mingling with some much older church buildings, Santa Catarina has a unique character all of its own.

This pleasant Miradouro is the ideal place to spend an afternoon relaxing, or arriving a little later and enjoying an early evening meal while the sun goes down.

On a hot summer evening, you will often find a cool breeze wafting up from the expansive Tagus River, while you listen to sounds of laughter and singing in the neighbourhood. Stay on for late night views, as the area takes on a completely different character.
