Overview

This public garden in the Rua Bartolomeu Dias was once a beach and its conversion was in honour of the Exhibition of the Portuguese World in 1940. This took place when the rest of the western wold was erupting into war, in the Second World War.

Before you arrive at the Jardim da Praça do Império, please examine a floor plan of the layout, it is perfectly symmetrical, as was the custom.

The main highlights of this garden are the fountain (Fonte Monumental) in the middle where the coat of arms of each of Portugal’s former colonies, 32 in total, are carefully designed with flowers and bushes.

In the present moment, birds long lost to urban landscapes worship the trees and the sunshine, while the shrill cries of children fill the air. Visit this urban lung and see what is possible, when people dream of what might be.
