Overview

The Great Earthquake of Lisbon in 1755 forced the Marquis of Pombal to build a temporary house in Ajuda to move the royal family. Shortly afterwards King Dom Jose 1 decreed that the farm immediately next to the new palace be annexed to grow fruit and vegetables for the royal house. By 1765, although only formally founded in 1768, this piece of land became Portugal’s first botanical gardens through the efforts of Domingos Vandelli.

French and Italian influences are evident to this day through the perfect symmetry of the landscaping. The Gardens comprise of two levels, with the upper terrace displaying the botanical collection and the lower level featuring a central lake for aquatic plants.

Live plants and seeds arrived from all over the world, and at one point, the collection amounted to more than 5,000 species. Acclimatisation difficulties reduced the number of specimens to around 1,200 within a couple of years.

The Gardens opened to the public during the reign of Dom João VI, and during his reign, the number of species rose again, thanks to the increase in the specimens presented by the governors of the country’s colonies.

The main highlights of this Botanic Gardens are the 1) the Dragon Blood Tree (Dracaena draco) a tree around 400 years old; 2) the Fountain of “40 bicas” where sea animals, real and mythological are carefully carved and the 3) Peafowls that walk freely in the garden.

Today, Jardim Botânico is under the stewardship of the University of Lisbon, and is the subject of research into preserving endangered species. When you pay your entrance fee, you contribute to this process. It is a perfect way to spend a lazy afternoon in nature.
